Dear Jeannine,
Ever since the age of twelve you have held a special place in my heart. I really don't know how to explain why. Maybe it was the absolute happiness I saw in the faces of your beautiful children. Maybe it was your thoroughly inspiring words and knowledge. You are one of the few women on this planet who has found her power. That is a rare accomplishment. You have changed the way women bring new souls into this world-from birth to adulthood. My baby and I thank you for helping to make our birth as wonderful as it was. Without you I would have had more fear in me and, consequently, Michael might not be alive today. He was close to death when he was born, but because I had no fear in me, he was able to thrive. I knew, as sure as the sun rising, that he wanted to see my face before he died. I trusted birth, our love, and his will to live. I also know, without a doubt, that the Earth itself will mourn your passing. Humanity desperately needs people like you. There's so much to say and I don't know how to say it. Let me sum it up: I don't even know you, but I Love you. You will live on in my family.

 Dialogue with a Conflicted Mother about Herbs

effects of certain herbs on a developing babe at 2-4 weeks gestation...
In a state of fear of motherhood again, with Barbara still so young, I took some herbs, wanting to deny my experience. Well, after 5 days of cohosh, tansy and pennyroyal, my womb is still secure. I'm still not thrilled with the prospect of being pregnant (which saddens me deeply, I want to be in bliss!). I've been charting my 'lack of cycles' and don't quite understand how we conceived. I wanted this next babe to be consciously welcomed in at a time when Barbara, Tom and I were all open to a new addition. And now I fear I've done some major damage...
Do you have any words of wisdom to pass along?

The three herbs you mention are not harmful to your baby.
They affect your womb -- irritants -- yet if you are still
pregnant, you have one healthy child coming!
However, your guilt is another matter. Literally.
If you continue to make yourself feel wrong about
a natural response to an unexpected pregnancy,
your baby will feel the hormonal effects of your
emotions. Ideally you will understand that what
you did was what you were supposed to do.
And NOW is another matter. From what I recall
of your Barbara, she is still a baby so you will be
tandem nursing, co-sleeping, and above all else,
more surrendered to mothering than you ever imagined.

Barbara will be 28 months old/new so yes still a baby. I truly wished for her the fullness of baby-hood before inviting in a sibling, but c'est la vie, a new experience.

Please feel free to quote from our conversations. If another woman can feel less shame or guilt from following her fight or flight reflex the better. I for one feel wonderful! As soon as I came to terms with the wee one in my womb, all nausea and exhaustion vanished! I knew I didn't believe in morning sickness :o)

A conflicted pregnancy is more common than we think. Bonnie's letters are amongst many I receive with similar pleas for help. In HYGIEIA: A WOMAN'S HERBAL, I report on many herbs and their power in inducing menses and for that, I have the responsibility to also teach fertility awareness so that every baby is a welcomed baby, from the beginning.
However, it is never too late to have a conscious conception and accept what-is. Bonnie found this to be true, as do a multitude of mothers who had the courage to understand that early ambivalence in pregnancy is par for the course in the world. Returning to love, is what will change the course of our world -- indeed, nothing else will.
