Return to the current report Return to the archive lists OCTOBER 2000 COSMIC WEATHER REPORT The month starts with a lovely Libra Sun, but Scorpio is well represented in the Moon, Mercury and Venus. Libra is the sign that is connected in my mind with diplomacy and all kinds of dualistic images. The only sign represented by the mechanical world, Libra carries some of the qualities of art and technology. Ruled by Venus or Aphrodite, I think of the beautiful and artistic qualities Libra gifts to us. Science and art move on the scales of Libra and meet in the physics of music and color. Libra is often found in the charts of presidents of the United States. President Clinton (8/19/46, 8:51 am CST, Hope AR), has an amazing chart for politics, with his Leo stellium including the Sun (with Pluto conjunct Mercury and Saturn), sextile to a stellium of Libra planets including his ascendent. Mars is conjunct Neptune and Venus in Libra (which may have gotten him into trouble, but also may have also contributed to his amazing popularity in the face of disgrace). Uranus conjunct the north node is in Gemini. Hillary, the loyal Scorpio partner and with a Moon in Pisces may not get to be president, but, like her husband, may have a few skeletons in her closet too. (Born 10/26/47 at around 8 pm CST in Chicago, IL), Hillary has stelliums in Leo, including Mars exactly conjunct Pluto and Saturn widely and Scorpio Sun with Venus conjunct Chiron and Mercury. If her time is at all accurate, she may have Uranus in Gemini rising. William Jefferson Clinton may be drawing on his middle name for extra appeal as does George W. Bush. It is interesting that these two politicians do somewhat represent a present day reenactment of the Washington/Jefferson dialog in politics. General George wanted the president to be able to call national days of fasting and prayer, while Jefferson ran on the platform that the Bill of Rights separated church and state for a very good reason. A central myth of Libra involves Aphrodite and her partners and forms a revealing backdrop for this month's patterns. Aphrodite's amazing tale of rising from the ocean foam that was formed when the severed genitals of Chronos were tossed there, offers quite a first impression! As for her primary partners Ares and Hephaistos, this is another amazing tale. It seems that Hera (who is also linked to this month's sign as wife of Zeus - Libra's dualism associates this sign with marriage and other strongly bonded partnerships), jealous of her husband, creates children without Zeus' help. Of course, this is problematic and two of the brothers, Ares the imposing god of war and Hephaistos the lame master craftsman, create more than their share of trouble for the Divine Family. Using his skills, Hephaistos manages to force the other divinities to give him the beautiful Aphrodite as his bride. This is perhaps not the best approach to the Great Goddess of Love! Hephaistos suspects infidelity and lays a trap that catches his lovely Aphrodite in bed with his brother Ares. Greek myth would seem to say that in the balance of marriage there is a measure of inequality that leads to fear, doubt, jealousy, competition, etc. and this leads in turn to the kind of dramas that Aphrodite, Ares and Hephaistos demonstrate so well. Hephaistos, born of his mother Hera's jealosy, is born lame and disfigured. Indeed, his entrance onto the divine scene on Mt. Olympus is met with laughter. Bill, Hillary and Monica were likewise caught in their tragi-comic drama and although all the actors come off looking rather lame, certainly President Clinton comes off looking the most lame, disfigured and comical, with Hillary the faithful wife and Monica, the mostly forgivable Aphrodite. October, starting as it does with three planets in Scorpio, emphasizes the off-color undercurrents that are involved in the politics of the upcoming election. Both the Gore and Bush camps are responding to the undertones of the Clinton administration and both parties have attempted to paint their candidates as morally straight. Gore's VP, Lieberman is perhaps a swing of the pendulum to the other extreme in hopes of making up for Bill's excesses. As the month progresses and we approach the election, the apparent simplicity of the libran two party system should start showing more of its scorpionic insect-ual shadow side. (For a closer look at the astrology of the candidates, click here). Bill Clinton left a legacy befitting Greek myth with the high drama of infidelity, entrapment and impeachment. The First Family is similar in some ways to the Divine Family of Greek myth as it carries in a symbolic way many hopes and fears of the American people (and international community). It is highly unlikely that America will elect a single person (like Ralph Nader) to the position of president for this same reason. Looking upward towards the heavens, and another kind of stars (rather than the political variety), the pattern of outer planets forming three groups in Air and Fire continue. Their arrangement has given us the ongoing theme of grand trines in the air signs and grand squares in the mutable signs. Quite a teeter-totter effect as the Sun and entourage have transited the space between the opposition. Mars following the pack, is the final planet to visit the early degrees of Virgo and create the tee-square, while Sun makes the third angle of the grand trine in lovely Libra. Several prominent stations let their influence be felt. At the very beginning of the month, Jupiter is resting right at the great axis represented by the eye of the Bull, Aldebaran, poised to retrace his expansive steps through early Gemini (exploring the immediate environment) while opposing Pluto near Antares and square to Mars guarding the third cardinal gate. Further into the month, Uranus and Neptune in Aquarius both turn direct liberating their qualities of inventiveness and oceanic awareness for new directions. And of course, we must not forget Mercury retro in the sign of his connection to the underworld, Scorpio. The Great Messenger just makes it past the cross quarter gate of 15 degrees Scorpio marked by the stars of the Scales or scorpion's pinchers before pausing to look back. Hermes psychopompos is the guide of souls to Hades realm, and his retro in the sign ruled by the Great Invisible divinity marks a time of deep soul searching and perhaps some chilling trickery. It was almost Halloween some 60 years ago when a Mercury in Scorpio helped create the great War of the Worlds scare on the new medium of radio, H.G. Wells' fiction dramatized and presented by another denizen of the deep, Orsen Wells. I wonder what kind of new scare we might find on the newest communications medium, the internet, this Halloween? I did notice that as the Moon last met with Mars, accenting the tee-square with Jupiter and Pluto, that the big news was the fuel shortage. Could it be that our over-expansive consumption (Jupiter in Gemini) could be bring us to the apocalyptic realizations (Pluto in Sagittarius) regarding our fuel oil (Mars in Virgo). Also around mid-month Saturn retro returns to Taurus and perhaps looks back on some of the lessons of the great alignment of last May in Taurus. There are lessons learned from that great gathering that will be reverberating throughout the galaxy for many years to come.
